On September 24, 2006, at approximately 2:00 A.M., Salisbury police officers responded to the Queen City Elks Lodge on Catherine Street for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Alphonso Gwaltney, 34, lying on the ground next to his vehicle behind the Lodge. Gwaltney was suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Gwaltney was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery, but later died of his injuries.
According to witnesses, the Queen City Elks Lodge was closing for the evening and patrons were exiting through this side door of the Lodge into the parking lot when the two men began to argue. Chandler and Gwaltney went around back to fight, and Chandler shot Gwaltney in the chest.
Salisbury police believe Ranson Chandler Jr. left the Queen City Elks Lodge and went to his residence at 410 Barnsdale Dr. In Salisbury, grabbed some belongings, and fled Salisbury, Maryland.
