Most Wanted News: Knoxville, Tennessee High Praise to Knoxville, Tennessee Community and Law Enforcement100% of the 26 bank robberies committed in the Knoxville area during 2007 have resulted in arrests do to teamwork and community policing
Febuary 17, 2008 KNOXVILLE TN NEWS -- The Knoxville Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Chief of Police Sterling P. Owen, IV of the Knoxville Police Department (KPD) both deserve high praise for their successful teamwork in aggressively fighting crime in the Knoxville, Tennessee area. As of January 25, 2008, 100% of the 26 bank robberies committed in the Knoxville area during 2007 have resulted in arrests. This unusually high arrest rate is contributed to local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working closely together to aggressively address every one of these bank robberies. In addition, other agencies instrumental in the success of these investigations included the Knox County Sheriff's Office and the Blount County Sheriff's Office. Furthermore, contributing to the success of arrests was the tremendous support received from both media and the community in keeping these bank robberies a public issue. Public awareness of these robberies as they occurred with following up communication of arrests propelled civic involvement leading to identification and location of suspected bank robbers. The last arrest of the year 2007 bank robbers occurred on January 24, 2008. Shabaaka Oran Awolowo in Cobb County, Georgia is accused of robbing the Covenant Health Federal Credit Union at 702 19th Street in Knoxville, Tennessee on December 14, 2007. In that robbery, a man dressed as a construction worker used a hoax bomb device to rob the Credit Union. A warrant for Robbery was obtained by the KPD for that incident. On January 11, 2008, the FBI office in Knoxville filed an authorized criminal complaint and obtained an Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution warrant for Awolowo who was identified as the perpetrator of the crime, and the arrest was accomplished by Cobb County authorities together with Special Agents from the Atlanta FBI.
As to date, only one attempted bank robbery remains unsolved in Knoxville, on 09/26/2007, at approximately 12:36 p.m., a man presented a demand note to a teller at the First Tennessee Bank at 9133 Middlebrook Pike. When the teller hesitated, the robber left the bank without obtaining any money. He was described as a soft-spoken black male with a neat appearance, wearing a black ball cap, a black and gray fleece zippered "Echo Unlimited" jacket with maroon lettering, black pants, and large black earphones around his neck. Finally, all law enforcement agencies involved in last year's operations are a shining example of good professional policing. In addition, their efforts coupled with the use of community policing not only shows the success of what can be achieved by working as a community, but also serves as an example of what Americans can truly accomplish working together.
