Heroin Filled Woman's Suit Shipped from New Delhi, IndiaUS CBP officers found the Horse after a routine X-ray showed an anomaly within the package.August 30, 2008 LOUISVILLE KY NEWS -- A woman's suit containing 568 grams of heroin, was intercepted by United States Customs and Border Protection officers working at the UPS Facility in Louisville, Kentucky on August 25, 2008. The suit, shipped from New Delhi, India, was addressed to a consignee in Toronto, Canada.
CBP officers found the Horse after a routine X-ray showed an anomaly within the package. The powered heroin was packed within two plastic bags and tucked in between the fabric of the Indian suit. The shipment of illegal drugs is valued at more than $50,000 on the streets of the United States. CBP Director of Field Operations David Murphy said, "I give our officers a lot of credit for finding drugs hidden in every conceivable manner at this facility and not letting them through. This heroin will never make it to a community now thanks to the diligence of CBP." India is the world's largest producer of legal opium, the raw material for codeine, morphine and other painkillers. However, according to the India police, drug gangs have been diverting opium meant for medicines to smuggling routes shared by heroin and morphine traffickers, gun-runners and Muslim militants. In an effort to keep opium out of hands of the criminal underworld, India's federal and state governments license every step of the legal opium process, from growing poppies to stocking and transporting the painkilling drugs they produce. In 2005, the Indian federal official, Mala Srivastava, who oversees the licensing system, denied that the system had flaws. "Whatever little diversion there is, is internal. We have never heard of Indian opium, or Indian heroin, traveling abroad." Well, Ms. Srivastava, now you have. US CBP has even provided you a picture of the smack. Fortunately, the US State Department's annual report on narcotics controls strategy call's India "a modest but growing producer of heroin for the international market." US CBP Officers process more than 40,000 parcels per night at the UPS Facility in Louisville, Kentucky, and make a variety of seizures including counterfeit checks, drugs, monetary instruments, fraudulent documents, and intellectual property rights violations. Unfortunately, no arrests have been made in relation to this seizure of the heroin filled woman's suit from New Delhi, India. Published by da: # # # |
