January 20, 2008 YUMA AZ NEWS -- A U.S. Border Patrol agent has died attempting to stop suspected smugglers believed to have entered the United States illegally. The Agent, while deploying a controlled tire deflation device to stop two vehicles driven by the suspected smugglers, was struck and killed. After striking the Border Patrol agent, both vehicles escaped into Mexico. Senior Patrol Agent Luis Aguilar, a 32-year-old father, was assigned to the Yuma, Arizona Border Patrol Station and was working near Andrade, California when he was killed in the line of duty on Saturday, at approximately 9:30 A.M., January 19, 2008, on Interstate 8 in the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreational Area, which is located about twenty miles west of Yuma, Arizona. Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar said, "This is tragic reminder of the dangers our agents face in the line of duty. Despite the ever-present, ever-increasing violence, we will continue to work toward securing America's borders and making our country, our communities safer places to be. We mourn the loss of one of our own. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and fellow agents."
