Merhige On the night of November 26, 2009, during a Thanksgiving gathering, Merhige allegedly shot and killed four family members:
Merhige also wounded his brother-in-law and another man during this domestic homicide. After the shootings, Merhige is believed to have fled the scene in his 2007 blue four-door Toyota Camry 4-door, bearing Florida license plate #W427JT. Merhige is believed to have been invited to the family Thanksgiving dinner at 104 Via Veracruz in Jupiter, Florida. However, police investigation has revealed that Merhige had a strong resentment toward several of the family members. During the evening, Merhige left the residence and returned a short time later with a weapon. Upon his return, Merhige, proceeded to shoot the victims without warning or provocation, killing the four and wounding the two. Merhige has since been survived off of cash withdrawn from his ATM bank account. He has not re-contacted any associates using any know phone numbers or e-mail. Further investigation revealed Merhige, staged his escape by means of avoiding law enforcement detection after the crime. Merhige is described as effeminate and possibly gay, and may frequent gay establishments. Therefore, the gay subculture should be especially watchful for this fugitive nutcase.

Psychopaths are defined as a person with an antisocial personality disorder, manifested in aggressive, perverted, criminal, or amoral behavior without empathy or remorse. However, Merhige was receiving medical treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), psychotic disorders, and hypertension. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is important to understand that about 40% of people in the general population who report symptoms of CFS have a serious, treatable, previously unrecognized medical or psychiatric condition (such as diabetes, thyroid disease, substance abuse). Indeed, Merhige may suffer from anxiety, and schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. During a psychotic episode, schizophrenia patients have trouble thinking clearly, communicating effectively, behaving appropriately, and may lose their grip on reality. Hallucinations such as hearing voices or seeing things that are not there, delusions and confused thinking are some of the signs of psychosis. Nonetheless, this domestic homicide was not committed due to a psychotic episode caused by schizophrenia, especially, since violence is not a symptom of schizophrenia, particularly homicide. On the contrary, Merhige staged his escape and planned this multiple murder, and therefore, was cognitive and competent of his actions. Paul Michael Merhige is further known to fake or display certain symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, including frequent bathing, shaving and difficulty making decisions. He is also known to fake or display certain symptoms of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome including insomnia. Paul Michael Merhige non-athletic, overweight and borderline obese. Merhige purchased four firearms in the month before the crime, including a Remington .308 rifle with a scope and bipod. Finally, on November 27, 2009, Merhige was charged by the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit Court, Palm Beach County, Florida, with premeditated first degree murder with a firearm and attempted first degree murder with a firearm, and a state warrant was issued for his arrest. A federal arrest warrant was issued by the United States District Court, Southern District of Florida, on December 4, 2009, after Merhige was charged federally with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
